he was born to Mark and Lillian Hunt Duell. In 1945 in Wellsville he married the former Ella Bessette who survives him.Viv graduated from WellsvilleHigh School in 1943 and entered the US Navy serving until 1945. In
1950 he moved to Rochester and worked for General Motors retiring in 1977. In 1983 he and his wife moved back to Fords Brook North Branch, his childhood home. Viv became involved with the Moose Lodge 601 in
Wellsville serving in all its offices, Moose Legion International and past president and achieved the Pilgrim Degree of Merit in Chicago,Ill. He was a member of the Elks Lodge # 1489, V.F.W. Post # 2530 and a 46
year member of the American Legion including Post # 702. Viv loved to hunt and will be remembered for being a kind and good hearted man that would do anything for you. Surviving besides his wife: a son Thomas [Mary
Ellen] Duell of San Jose, CA. , a daughter Nancy [Lawrence] Sennett of Ocala,FL. ; 5 grandsons and 5 great grandsons ; a step brother Louie Freeman ; several cousins , nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by: a

Marie was a member of St. Peter’s Cathedral; current President of the Lady Elks Aux.; Board of Realtors member; Beta Sigma Phi member; American Legion Aux. member and a Red Hat Society member all of St. Petersburg. Survivors include: 4 sons, Robert H. Jane Margaret Fitzgerald Cook
of 206 Stevens Street passed away on January 4, 2005 at UNCHospital in Chapel Hill, NC following a brief illness. She was born on July 25, 1921 in Rochester, NY the daughter of Garrett and Beatrice (Skuse) Fitzgerald. Jane was raised in Rochester and lived most of her adult life in Wellsville. She had a long and fulfilling life that included raising her family as well as being employed as Assistant Director of Personal at AlfredUniversity prior to her retirement in 1984. Among her many accomplishments, she was extremely proud of earning her BA degree from AlfredUniversity at the age of 67. Her later years involved spending time with her family and friends and volunteering at the area schools. She was a life member the First Congregational Church in Wellsville and continued a close relationship with her church family. She remained very active and enjoyed her daily walks, reading and playing bridge. She is survived by her former husband Michael Cook of Westfield, NY, her children; J. Michael Cook and his wife Gail, Brian Cook and his wife Peggy, Kathy Cook and her husband Mark Hamalainen and Alan Cook and his wife Jamie, all of North Carolina. In addition she leaves behind six Wonderful grandchildren; Kevin, Kim, Garrett, Julia, Margot and Ethan.Friends are invited to call on Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Mildred U. Weirich , 86 Loving Mother, Grandmother, and Friend went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center,
Wellsville, NY, after a brief illness. Born on August 17, 1918, in Brainerd, MN, she was the daughter of Edwin Grant Hallock and Ida Theresa Tompkins, who preceded her in death. In earlier years, Mildred
resided, attended schools, and worked in the Rushford, Delevan, Franklinville, and Belfast areas. On August 17, 1941, in Wellsville, NY, she married Walter D. Weirich, Sr., who preceded her in death on June 13,
1993. During their 52 years of marriage, they made their home in the Wellsville area, residing most of their lives on the South Branch of the Fords Brook Road. She was also preceded in death by three
brothers, Edward, Willard, and Wendell Hallock, and one sister, Bernice Hoffman.Surviving are a daughter Lois W. (Stuart) Halbert of Mission Viejo, CA, and two sons, Walter D. (Toni) Weirich, Jr. of Rushford, NY,
and Wendell E. (Sharon) Weirich, Wellsville, NY; three grandchildren, Andrew J. (AJ) (Sherry) Weirich, Scio, NY, Liana M. (Jeffrey) Joslyn, Wellsville, NY, and David W. Weirich, Rushford, NY; two step great
granddaughters of Scio, NY; and several nieces and nephews.In December 1996, Mildred moved to Manor Hills, Wellsville,NY, where she met her dear friend, Thomas Alaimo. In October 2003, she moved to
WellsvilleManorCareCenter, where she resided until her death.Mildred loved to read, garden, take walks, and care for her dogs. She will be remembered as a loving and caring individual whose life was devoted to
her family. Mildred was able to light up a room with her ever-present smile. Her cheerful personality, along with her tender heart, will be missed by everyone who was blessed to have known her.A service

On July 9, 1947 in DuBois she married Lloyd Moyer who survives. She was a graduate of Sandy High School DuBois and had been employed at the Meter Works in DuBois.I n 1948 she and Lloyd moved to Wellsville, where she worked at the Silk factory. She later was employed by the Wellsville Central School System at the Martin Street and WashingtonElementary schools. Alice was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and was a long time volunteer at the Fun Fair and for the Wellsville Little League. She loved to watch her children and grandchildren at their numerous ball games.Surviving in addition to her husband Lloyd are 3 children, Rose Marie Scott of Alma, Richard (Jody) Moyer of Erie, PA, Mark (Sue) Moyer of Scio, 8 grandchildren, 2 brothers; Jack and James Durkin both of California and several nieces & nephews. George and Agnes Trahey Flanagan. She was a graduate of WellsvilleHigh School and Myer Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Buffalo. She was a private duty nurse and then worked at JonesMemorialHospital until
1944. Margaret served with the Army Nurses Corp from 1944 to 1946. After the war she worked in both the Buffalo and BataviaVA’s and later was an Industrial Nurse for Union Carbide in Niagara Falls, Western
Electric in Buffalo and for Cincinnati Bell retiring in 1984. Margaret was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville and is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.She was predeceased by 2

HAROLD G. THOMPSON, 90 of 120 S. Brooklyn Avenue passed away
Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at JonesMemorialHospital. He was born February 21, 1914 in Roulette, PA the son of Claude and Mabel (Grover) Thompson. On
June 13, 1941 in Wellsville he married Norma Mae Wightman who survives. Harold was a resident of Wellsville since 1923, and was a 1934 graduate of
WellsvilleHigh School. He was employed by CE Air Preheater and retired as the senior welding engineer in 1976 after 40 years of service. He was the
co-founder of the Wellsville Concert Band, and spent 11 years with the Junior Rifle Club teaching young people to use firearms safely. Harold was a member
of the Civil Air Patrol during World War II and the Allegany County Civil Defense. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association, American
Welding Society, Allegany County BOCES Advisory Board, Wellsville Grand Squares Dance Club, Penn-NY Promenaders, and the Christian Temple in
Wellsville. Harold also enjoyed woodworking, candy making, and he loved music. In addition to his wife, Harold is survived by 2 sons: Douglas (Sue)
Thompson of Taylors, SC; Robert (Priscilla) Thompson of Wellsville; 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and several cousins. Friends are invited to call on Saturday, February 5th from noon to 2:00 pm at the J.W. Embser

RONALD F. SOROCHIN
, 59 of Amity Lake Road passed away Friday, February 11, 2005 at home after a long illness. He was born December 26, 1945 in Kenmore, NY the son of Joseph and Mary (Sroka) Sorochin. On August 5, 1967
he married Catherine Beazley, who survives. Ron graduated from ArchbishopWalshHigh School in 1964, and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1968, and a Masters of
Science Degree in Biology Education from AlfredUniversity. He served in the United States Air Force from 1969-1972, where he reached the rank of Staff
Sergeant. From 1972-1976 he was the Senior Laboratory Technologist at Olean General Hospital, Chief Technologist at Bethesda Hospital from 1976-1980 Clinical Laboratory Manager at Jones Memorial Hospital from
1980-1986. In 1986 Ron became an Associate Professor, then Medical Laboratory Program Director for the Department of Allied Health at Alfred
State College until 1995. While at Alfred, Ron received the Alfred State College Department of Allied Health Teacher of the Year award in 1992. He
published two laboratory manuals (Hematology and Coagulation, in 1995 and Urinalysis and Body Fluids, in 1995) and several articles in Medical Laboratory
Observatory Magazine. He was an inspector for NAACLs and is listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Ron was also an avid fisherman and a great
friend to many. In addition to his wife, Ron is survived by 2 sons: Adam (Jennifer Spicer) Sorochin, of Wellsville, Craig (Donna Aiken) Sorochin of
Barboursville, VA, 4 grandchildren: Michael, Megan, and Gabrielle Sorochin and Scott McMorris, a sister: Jean (Donald) Bell and a niece: Diane (Scott)

ROBERT G. GARDNER 83, of 153 W. State Street passed away on Wednesday February 16, 2005 at JonesMemorialHospital. He was born on April
25, 1921 at the home of his grandparents on Harder Place in Wellsville, the son of James and Marie (Myers) Gardner. He was a 1939 graduate of
WellsvilleHigh School, a veteran of WW II serving from 1943 to 1946 in the U.S. Army, with the 253rd. Combat Engineers Battalion, Company C. in the
European Theater of Operation. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1946 he returned to the Gardner Pattern Works in Wellsville
as an apprenticed wood pattern maker. He learned the trade from his father, who operated the business until his death in 1966. Bob then operated the
pattern shop until it closed in 1993 when he retired. Bob was a 52 year member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge # 1495, serving as Exalted Ruler in 1952. He
joined the Grant Duke Hose Company # 1 in Wellsville in 1941 and after the war held every elected office within the hose company. In 1959 he was elected 2nd. Asst. Chief and in April of 1961 was elected chief of the
Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department. He held the office of Town Councilman for 4 years and when he was elected Mayor of Wellsville in April of 1963; he
was Fire Chief, Town Councilman and Mayor concurrently. He served as the Democrat Mayor of Wellsville for 29 years. During this period he held several
positions with the NYS Conference of Mayors culminating with his election as President in June of 1974. In September of 1972 Mayor Gardner was appointed
by Governor Nelson Rockefeller to the Intergovernmental Fiscal Advisory Board, representing more than 500 villages in New YorkState. He was a life
member of the Morrison Hayes Post # 702 American Legion and the Frank B. Church Post # 2530 VFW for over 50 years. He was a proud member of his last
man’s group the L.O.P.E.S. He was the Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year” in 1987 and the “Elk of the Year” in 1992. He was a life long member of
St. John’s Episcopal Church in Wellsville; baptized in 1923 and confirmed in 1934. He served on the Vestry of St. John’s for many years, held the office of
Senior Warden for 2 terms and Junior Warden for 2 terms. He is survived by his wife, Norma Geoppner-Gardner, 7 children; Cheryl (Donald) Andrews of St.
Petersburg, FL, Sandra Le Crone of Amarillo, TX, Robert (Jackie) Gardner of Saranac Lake, NY, Stephen Gardner of San Francisco, CA, Donald Gardner of
Amarillo, TX, Mary (James) Ruch of Almond, NY, Brian (Paula) Gardner of Wellsville, 2 stepsons, Dan (Rita) Geoppner of Wellsville, William (Sally)

Roy William Austin, 67 of South Broad Street, Wellsville, NY passed away on February 24th, 2005 at his home with his family at his side.He was born in
Cuba, NY on October 4, 1937, the son of William Roy and Madeline Violet (Patterson) Austin. Following his graduation in 1955 from AngelicaCentralSchool he volunteered for service in the U.S. Airforce and after
serving 2 years (1955 – 1957) received an honorable discharge. He was employed with C.E. AirPreheater for 20 years and retired from there in 1984.
At the time of his death he was the owner of Austin Logistics and Austin Associates. He was also in partnership with his son William (Bill) in U.S.
Shred and New Tech Transport.On January 31, 1975, he married Judith D. Wightman in Wellsville, NY, who survives him. He is also survived by his only

December 31, 1937 in Wellsville he married Irene H. Marsh who predeceased him April 3, 1973, then again on December 17, 1977 to Thelma Kear Duke,
who survives. Milton was a lifelong resident of Wellsville, and a 1929 graduate of WellsvilleHigh School. He was employed as traffic manager by
Worthington Corp. of Wellsville for 37 years. For a time he was employed by Victor Aluminum Works in Friendship. He was also a former resident of the
proctor district of Wellsville and most recently Cryder Creek of Whitesville. Milton had sent winters in Holiday Florida. He had attended the
TrinityLutheranChurch. He sang with the Apollo Club, appeared in the Lions Club Minstrel Show, and was a member of the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle
Corps. He was also an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener.In addition to his wife Thelma, Milton is survived by a son: Max B. (Sandra) Graves of Andover,
a granddaughter: Kristie (Dennis) Stebbins of Corning, a great grandson: Kody Stebbins of Corning, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by

February 25, 2005 at home. He was born February 1, 1952 in Wellsville, the son of William and Argie (Calhoun) Jandrew. On May 21, 1977 in Petrolia, he
married Karen Guinnip, who survives. In 1970, Dale graduated from Scio High School and later AlfredState CollegeVocational School in Wellsville. He was a
self employed electrician, and also taught for 1 year at the AlfredState CollegeVocational School. He was also a member of the Allentown Volunteer
Fire Department. Dale loved the Lord, and attended the First Baptist Church of Shinglehouse and the Knights Creek Evangelical Methodist Church of Scio.
He traveled on several missionary trips to Nicaragua,Mexico, Alaska, and West Virginia. He was also a counselor at CampPennuel. In addition to his wife

1946 in Andover he married Edna L. Claire who predeceased him on July 24, 2003.He was life long resident of Wellsville and a veteran of the U.S. Army
during the Korean Conflict. He was employed a press operator for the Wellsville Daily Reporter for 27½ years and later was a security guard for
Dresser-Rand Corporation for 10 years retiring in 1990. Leaon was a life member of both the Morrison-Hayes Post 702 American Legion and the Frank
B. Church Post 2530 VFW. He loved country music, NASCAR, outdoor activities and spending time with his many close friends.He is survived by 1 son; Leaon
“Bob” (Rebecca) Fanton of Wellsville, 3 granddaughters; Terry (Scott) Dodge of Brooksville, FL, Michelle and Erica Fanton both of Wellsville, several nieces

, 88 of 81 Madison Street passed away on Sunday April 3, 2005 at Jones Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born on March 8, 1917 in Wellsville, the son of Clarence Eugene and
Lillian (Vanderhoff) Gleason. On September 11, 1937 in Bolivar he married Mary A. Kalkhof who predeceased him on November 29, 1995. A lifelong resident of Wellsville, Buck attended WellsvilleCentralSchool and was a
veteran of the U.S. Army during WW II. He was employed by the Sinclair Refinery as a Lab Technician from 1939 until it’s closing in 1958. He later
owned and operated a TV repair business and worked as a TV Technician forCarpetTown until his retirement in 1984. He was an avid horseshoe pitcher
and had received many awards. He is survived by two sons, Daniel (Patricia) Gleason of Crossville, TN and William (Beverly) Gleason of Middlesex, NY; one
daughter, Jane (Daniel) Hartman of Canisteo, NY; Six granddaughters, four grandsons, ten great grandsons, five grant granddaughters and two great-great grandsons. In addition to his parents and wife, he was

Pearl Elizabeth Ross 84 passed away on Tuesday April 5, 2005 at
JonesMemorialHospital following a brief illness. She was born Feb. 19, 1921 in Harrison Valley,Pa. one of seven children of Curtis and Martha[Truax]Robbins.
On April 10, 1939 she married Clair W. Ross who predeceased her on April 22,1995. Pearl moved to Wellsville as a young woman and worked in several
restaurants and grocery stores, including Cretekos, Harvy and Carry’s and NuWay before and after marrying. In the early 1980s, she opened the Lone
Star Cafe’ on Main Street with her daughter Patricia. She enjoyed square dancing with the grand squares, traveling and her grandchildren. She loved
horses and dogs, especially Skipper and loved to walk in the falling snow. She especially enjoyed cooking and baking.She was the proud mother of two
daughters, Patricia Seaver, Pratt, {Ronald} Baker and Kathryn Ross both of Wellsville. She will be sadly missed by her 4 grandchildren, 11 great
grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, six siblings, Clifford, Albert, Harry, Clair and Jess and

Sanford “Sammy” Stevens of 124 North Highland Ave. passed away on Saturday April 9, 2005 at JonesMemorialHospital. He was born in Alfred on December 29, 1913 to Thomas and Clara[Smith]Stevens. On June 12,
1939Sanford married Agnes Arnold, daughter of Albert and Katherine Arnold at the FirstTrinityLutheranChurch in Wellsville. His parents moved to Wellsville in
1916, where Sammy attended school. He played football for WellsvilleHigh School and graduated in 1931. After graduation he worked for Cannon’s Men
Store then at Ritter Oil Company. He was later hired to work in the machine shop at Moore Steam Turbin where he stayed for 38 years retiring from what is now Dresser Rand in 1977. Sammy was an accomplished amateur
photographer whose work was published in a “Life” magazine article reporting on the Sinclair Refinery Fire of 1939 in Wellsville. He was an avid sportsman,
enjoying large and small game hunting, especially at the Kibbe Camp in Pennsylvania. Sammy and his son Don fished streams and lakes for over a half
of century. He built kayaks in the 1960s which are still being used.Sammy was a devoted member of the FirstTrinityLutheranChurch in Wellsville and its
men’s club. He volunteered many hours for various needs at the church and sang in its choir for a number of years.He is survived by his son Donald
[Marilyn] Stevens of Wellsville and a granddaughter Carol [Darren] Fanton of Wellsville, a niece and a nephew and several cousins. He was predeceased by

of Hornell, NY, L.C. Whitford Company of Wellsville and most recently Wayne Paving & Contracting of Shinglehouse, PA until his retirement in 2004. He was
an avid sportsman and traveler, a member of St. John Episcopal Church in Wellsville, the Wellsville Elks Lodge # 1495, the Morrison Hayes America
Legion Post # 702, the Frank B. Church Post 2530 VFW, the Six S Golf Club and the People to People Citizens Ambassador Program. Through this program
he traveled to Russia, Sibera, the Republic of China, Australia and New Zealand. Surviving in addition to his wife Betty are 3 daughters, Ann

later learned how to drive semi trucks and drove for Swift Trucking. He was a disc jockey in the area known as Joe the DJ. He belonged to the Moose Lodge
601 of Wellsville and played in the Coorslight Pool League also in Wellsville. Joe had volunteered at the Shinglehouse Fire Department, loved to play bingo,

HERMAN THIELE, 96, formerly 157 Stone Dam Road passed away at the Wellsville Manor Care Center Wednesday, May 25, 2005 following a brief
illness. He was born March 24, 1909 in Buffalo, the son of Bernard and Elizabeth (Schwalb) Thiele. He was married to the former Bessie Ann Mulvey
who predeceased him March 23, 2002. A former resident of Buffalo, he served with the U. S. Army during World War II and received a Bronze Star for his
part in storming the beaches at Normandy, Herman was later employed by Buffalo Ice and Power; was an assistant engineer at Buffalo School #4, and a
doorman and elevator operator at the Statler Hotel. After retirement he moved to the Wellsville area and has resided here for the past 30 years.
Herman is survived by 3 nieces: Janice Grubb of Hamburg, Della McCarty of Buffalo, Jo Ann Hlavaty of Wellsville; and a sister-in-law Ruth Mulvey of

daughter of Randall E. and Lynn C. (Green) Bentley Sr. In August of 1995 in Andover she married Jack White, who survives. She was a graduate of
BelmontCentralHigh School and had first been employed at the WellsvilleManorCareCenter, then at HighlandHealthCareCenter in Wellsville as
a nurse’s aid. She loved her job and will be greatly missed by the residents. Carol was an avid bowler and loved camping and fishing with her husband.

first employed by the Sinclair Refinery and later by the L. C. Whitford Co. until his retirement in 1976. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception
Church, a life member of the Wellsville Elks Lodge # 1495, the Lynch-Burgett American Legion Post # 397 in Andover and was inducted into the WellsvilleHigh School “Sports Hall of Fame”. Walter was the unofficial
historian of Wellsville and was an avid local high school sports fan.Surviving in addition to wife Irene, is 1 daughter, Nancy (Kevin) Monroe of Wellsville, 4

WellsvilleHigh School and received a scholarship to the School of the Arts in New York City. She graduated from Olean Business Institute and was first
employed by Worthington Corp., later Rockwell Brothers in Wellsville from 1962-1965, and finally as a secretary for C. E. Air Preheater Co., retiring in

of 1932 Stannards Road passed away at Jones Memorial Hospital on Thursday June 16, 2005. He was born on January 6, 1945 in Wellsville to Francis and Helena O’Hara Sawyer. On July 8, 1972 in Wellsville
he married the former Sandra Wright who survives. Jim was a loving son, father, husband and a friend to all. He was a life long resident of Stannards
and Wellsville where he attended Immaculate Conception School and graduated from WellsvilleHigh School in 1963. Jim had earned a business degree from Olean Business Institute and had worked in the office at
Worthington and was a courier for Fleet Bank. In the late 1980’s he joined his father in real estate and became the primary broker and owner of Sawyer
Realty. He retired in November of 2004 turning the business over to his son Patrick, the third generation of the family. Jim was a member of the
ImmaculateConceptionChurch in Wellsville, the Educational Foundation of Alfred State College, Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors
from 2002 to 2005 and was recognized for outstanding service to the Chamber in 2005 and the Wellsville Elks Lodge. He had coached Harris Supply for the
Wellsville Little League, was a four time marathon runner, enjoyed playing sports including basketball and softball, was a lifetime fan of the Boston
Celtics and the Green Bay Packers and lived life for everyone around him. Surviving besides his wife include his parents of Stannards ; his Son Patrick

Allentown Fireman’s Auxiliary and the Colden Home Bureau. Margaret enjoyed keeping busy with many hobbies and her family. She enjoyed collecting

1942 to 1947 as a Medical Technician in North Africa and the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1947 to 1950. He was first employed by the Mingus Dairy in
Stannards, then at Occidental Petroleum in North Tonawanda for 25 years. Later he was a Veterinary Technician with Dr. Michael Doty, DVM in Wellsville,
retiring in 1993.Surviving in addition to his wife Nancy, is 1 daughter, Rose-Marie Florentine of Wellsville, 3 grandchildren, Bernadette (Garry) Hall of
Northeast, PA, John (Pam) Florentine of Belmont, Timothy (Olivia) Florentine of Rochester, 5 great grandchildren, 1 sister, Ruth (Jim) Dailey of Millport, PA,

Dealership in Los Angeles for 25 years, retiring on February 21, 1992. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in LA and had a pleasant sense of
humor and enjoyed making people smile.Edward is survived by 2 brothers, William Jelinek and Charles (Anne) Jelinek, 2 Stepsons, Kenneth (Lupie)
Norman and John (Kim) Norman, 1 step daughter, Elizabeth (Thomas) Stoll of Wellsville, 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He was

the Christian Temple in Wellsville for 81 years.She is survived by 1 son, Philip E. (Gladys) Swarthout of Wellsville; a daughter, Joan (Joseph) Carlucci of

dairy farm; he later was employed by A. L. Blades & Sons Inc. of Belmont as a truck driver and after moving to Florida he was a self employed contractor.
After he retired he moved back to Belmont in 2000 and was a social member of the Herbert DeLong Post 808 American Legion in Belmont. He was currently

After her retirement she worked part time for the Allegany County Episcopal Ministry. Ellen enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. Survivors
