JOHN J. SLOAN of 6033 Route 417 E. passed away on Tuesday December 9, 2003 shortly after arrival at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. He was born September 14, 1918 in Allentown, the son of John P. and Tirzah (Smith) Sloan. On July 10, 1937 in Wellsville he married Geraldine M. Hurd, who predeceased him on October 20, 2000. John was a life long resident of Allentown had attended the Allentown and Vosburg schools and was a graduate of Bolivar High School. At age 18 he began his career in the oil fields as a roustabout and continued as an oil producer for Sloan Estate throughout his life. He was also a partner in the S.C. & F. Oil Company of Andover, operated a Christmas tree farm and was a crane operator at C. E. Air Preheated Company in Wellsville from September 23, 1964 until his retirement on February 1, 1981.
He was a member of the Allentown United Methodist Church, the Allentown Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Allentown Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He played the saxophone and piano and had a dance band in his early years. He loved woodworking, remodeling and was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Beverly Root of Allentown and Barbara (Doug) Lewis of Port Orange, FL. formerly of Scio, 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews and his good friend and companion Gertrude Peaslee of Bolivar. He was predeceased by a half brother, Leonard Runyan and 2 sisters, Mary Alice Fuller and Ethel Richardson.
Friends are invited to call on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will be Saturday December 13th at 11:00 am in the Allentown United Methodist Church, with Rev. Diane Cox and Roberta Baker presiding. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellsville and memorial suggestions include the Allentown United Methodist Church, Allentown Volunteer Fire Department or to the S.P.C.A. Serving Allegany County.
