Joseph Jerome Tobin, 87 of Manor Hills passed away on Thursday April 22, 2004 at Jones Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.  He was born Sept. 15, 1916 in Yonkers, NY,  the son of Thomas Michael and Agnes Crowley Tobin. On Jan 7, 1946 in St. Patrick’s Cathedral he married Dorothy Gettig who pre-deceased him in 1987.

Joe was a 1934 graduate of All Hallows High School in New York City. He attended Niagara University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC in 1938.  He received his Masters of Arts in Education from Columbia University in 1941.

        Although legally blind in one eye since childhood, he outwitted the Army doctors on the eye test and enlisted in the United States Army in July, 1942. He served in the Third Army, XX Corp, 135th Combat Engineers and in the 94th Infantry Division.  From July 1944 to April 1945 he served in the European Theater in France and in Germany. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action during the Battle for Metz in Nov. 1944. He was also awarded the Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal.

Joe worked as an Oiler for the Poirier McClain Construction Co. in Geneva, NY and as Machine Maintenance Foreman for Walsh Driscoll Co. in Port of Spain, Trinidad. He was a Business Representative for Consolidated Edison, Westchester County, NY for 30 years retiring in 1978.

        He loved gardening and music and was always singing while he worked. He was an avid reader and did extensive research in Russian History

        Joe was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Scio, NY. He was a fifty-three year member of the American Legion, last affiliated with the Herbert DeLong Post 808 Belmont, NY.

        In addition to his parents and wife, Joe was pre-deceased by four brothers: Hon. John E. Tobin, Francis P. Tobin, William A. Tobin and Thomas M. Tobin, Jr. Joe is survived by daughter Rusty Tobin of Belmont, NY, son Joseph  Tobin Jr. and his wife Linda of Uniontown, Ohio, and daughter Teresa Tobin and her husband Gary Cohen of Metuchen, NJ; his grandchildren Charles Cohen and Rebecca Erickson of Edison, NJ, Sarah Cohen and Joseph Cohen of Metuchen, NJ; sisters-in-law Virginia Tobin Clark of Florida and Lois Tobin, family friend Jackie Manis of Belmont and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call on Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. and Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in BELMONT. Services will begin Wednesday April 28, 2004 at 10:30 am with a prayer in the Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church in Belmont at 11:00 am with Rev. Dennis Wolf as Celebrant. The committal with military honors will follow Mass.
