Margaret Lehmann Shelp, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and psychologist age 72 of 67 Boss Street, Bolivar died December 26, 2003 at home after a lengthy illness with cancer. Born November 19, 1931 in Rochester, NY she was the daughter of Bruno and Marie (Petz) Lehmann. On March 21, 1959 she married Irving F. Shelp.
Mrs. Shelp graduated from High School in Rochester, earned an undergraduate degree from Heidelberg College and a graduate degree from Ohio University. She was employed as a psychologist in various school districts, beginning with Rochester City Schools and retiring from Allegany-Catt BOCES in 1987. She always gained great satisfaction from helping children.
She was a member of Bolivar United Methodist Church, formerly active in many church activities, the Women’s Christian Association, and playing piano for church services. Other organizations she participated in include the American Psychological Association, AARP, 4C’s Senior Group, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a past president of the Lioness Club in Canaseraga and was active in the Richburg Literary Club, Loyalty Circle, Jones Memorial Hospital Twig, and the Allegany County Homemakers.
Surviving besides her husband are her children: son William I. Shelp of Bolivar, daughter Amy M. Ratzel of Bolivar, and son Eric R. Shelp of West Henrietta, NY. Also surviving are her grandchildren Nicole and Rick Ratzel and Joshua Shelp, a brother Robert P. Lehmann of Rochester, NY, a sister-in-law Sylvia Lehmann of Van Nuys, CA and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother, father, and Brother John R. Lehmann of Van Nuys, CA.
There will be no prior visitation and a memorial service will be held at a later date at the Bolivar United Methodist Church, with Rev. Larry Smith and Rev. David Herne presiding. A private burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville.
